It is the only language in India which is spoken by more people than any other language in the country. It has several dialects and is largely spoken by Tamil population in southern India. Chennai, formerly known as Madras, was the capital of Tamil Nadu state until 1996 when it became a union territory and was governed directly by Indian government. Tamil usually does not use any form of conjunct consonants to write words that have a stemmed vowel because all consonants are shown together which makes it easier for children to read and learn to read. This is because Tamil is written with the Tamil script which uses at least one letter for each of the sounds. For example, "ka", "ga", "kaa" are represented by the one letter, which is phonetically different. Thus, Tamil is phonetic and it has no or very little vowel distinction between words like or . The root consonant of a word is written at the beginning of the word indicating the person who spoke that particular word. There are several basic rules which can be used to decode Tamil characters (see also Tamil script):Tamil words are often spelt phonetically with short vowels like or written as , above. And, while some consonants are not pronounced, others are. Tamil script is a syllabic alphabet and can be transliterated into Roman letters . At the end of each word, a colon (:) or a full stop (.) is used to show that the preceding vowel is short. In the same way, , , & & are also used to symbolize short vowels. In this way, the transliteration of Tamil words into Roman letters is , which represents Tamil consonants more clearly than writing them out phonetically. For example, /ka/ becomes . The vowel mark ensures that all consonants have no ambiguity of being pronounced in any certain way. Tamil script was later derived from the Brahmi script, which had evolved over several centuries of continuous use. Tamil Brahmi was written in an upright position on a flat surface. Due to the working of the key strokes, Tamil script is hard to learn for beginners. It is difficult to get an idea about how Tamil is pronounced for different letters and words since it involves reading different sounds at the same time, so it is easy to confuse'. Despite lacking vowels, Tamil can still be read phonetically because each consonant has a unique sound that carries across any word without phonetic interpretation. It is written from left to right and the syllables run together. Tamil is written by tracing letters that represent sounds and words. TAMIL WORD DECODING: Tamil word is composed of alphabets. Each alphabet consists of many letters and we separate them with full stop "." or colon ":". We can use these symbols as vowel marks which mean 'short' vowel sounds not the vowels themselves. These marks convey meaning about how parts of a word sound, such as stress or syllable breaks within a word. By writing the special marks, we do not have to change our word order. cfa1e77820
